Still looking for official announcement but yesterday come commentators on Russian TV said that apparently Grosjean is not coming to play In Moscow for France in DC....this might be a slight shine of hope for us considering Kolya and Marat are out This was on my alerts this morning Its more like a media hipe Note that Shamil says: "if, ofcourse, his injury would not get worse than it is right now," Safin to lead Russia against France in Davis Cup www.chinaview.cn 2005-07-04 19:20:19 MOSCOW, July 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Australian Open champion Marat Safin will lead Russia in its Davis Cup quarter-final against France this month. "Marat is in the team and should play against the French if, ofcourse, his injury would not get worse than it is right now," said Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev on Monday. Tarpishchev also named French Open semi-finalist Nikolay Davydenko, 2002 Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny, Igor Andreev and new comer Teimuraz Gabashvili for the July 15-17 tie on clay at Moscow's Olympic arena. Safin has been troubled by pain in his left knee in the past two months and even contemplated surgery but then decided to carry on. France captain Guy Forget named French number one Richard Gasquet along with Paul-Henri Mathieu, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra after Sebastien Grosjean had pulled out because of fatigue. The Moscow tie will be the first meeting between the two nations since Russia edged France 3-2 to clinch its first Davis Cup title in Paris in 2002. Enditem

I am sooooooooo fed up with these insinuations (is this the word?) of Tarpischev!!!!! I know he's playing mind games with the French..one thing he doesn't account for are totally lost fans!!!! Marat will not play...it's almost a 100% certain..he might be there to watch but will not play. It will be a suicide to go and play on clay with a torn ligament.....

Everybody is almost 100% certain of that, Annie, and if Tarpischev says so, that means there's approximatively a possibility of 0.01% to see Marat play this DC. He tries to give hope to everybody but I don't think it's a good idea because, if Marat doesn't play, fans will be desperate. Same thing for Kolya. So this may not be a good strategy, all the more as french people know about his injury and guess he'll not play... But Grosjean said "With or without Safin, I think Russia will win", so let's just trust him !

But I guess its par for the course and they want to sell tickets Grosjean really said that!! I think too he is playing mind games Not that I dont think the boys have a good chance against the French boys, but there are injuries there too, and Marat won't be there.

Hi Teresa !
Yeah Grosjean really did, it was before Wimbledon, so before he knew he wouldn't play. I didn't think of the tickets selling issue... That's probably a reason why Shamil said that, you're right. Anyway, if Marat really gets operated, there is no chance to see him play.

Gorsjean did say that and there's an audio of this on the official site of the DC , the link is posted on the previous page in this thread....Grosjean refused to come and play though...so I guess it's Gasquet and Mathieu who are NN1 and 2..tough one....

from tarpischev.com:
French tennis player Sebastien Grosjean refused to participate in the 1/4 final match against Russia in Moscow, says Reuters. After a tough quarterfinal match against Andy Roddick at Wimbledon Grosjean approached the French Team Captain Guy Forget and told him won't be able to play in Moscow due to tiredness. "I need a break", Grosjean said. Herewith, the French Team will probably bring the following players to Moscow: Richard Gasquet, Paul Henry Mattheu, Arnaud Clemant and Michelle Llodra.

Safin to lead Russia against France
Australian Open champion Marat Safin will lead Russia in this month's Davis Cup quarter-final tie against France despite a knee injury. "Marat is in the team and should play against the French if, of course, his injury would not get worse than it is right now," said captain Shamil Tarpishchev.
Tarpishchev also named French Open semi-finalist Nikolay Davydenko, 2002 Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny, Igor Andreev and newcomer Teimuraz Gabashvili for the July 15-17 tie on clay at Moscow's Olympic arena.
Safin has been troubled by pain in his left knee in the past two months and even contemplated surgery but then decided to carry on.
Davydenko, who surprised many tennis experts to reach the last four at Roland Garros, has also been suffering from a wrist injury, forcing him to default from his Wimbledon's second round match against Jonas Bjorkman last month.
France captain Guy Forget named French number one Richard Gasquet along with Paul-Henri Mathieu, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra after Sebastien Grosjean had pulled out because of fatigue.
The Moscow tie will be the first meeting between the two nations since Russia edged France 3-2 to clinch their first Davis Cup title in Paris in 2002 when Youzhny came from two sets down to beat Mathieu in the deciding fifth rubber.

Now after all this how can any fan remain sane? I mean OK, theoretically it is possible. He goes and has a knee laser surgery on Thursday. Then next week he travells here and stays with the team but doesnt play. One day before the match starts when the draw takes place you can change players according to rules of the DC. So he might come down and just not play but be in the team. But I mean come on.....leave the fans some sanity!!!!!!!!! Any normal person could go mad with all these contradictory announcements!!!!!

Looks like the mind tricks work: I found that on a french sports website (I'm translating so it's normal if you don't understand ): Davis Cup: Safin will really be there 05/07/2005 - 08:04 Marat Safin is definitely a member of the Russian team who will face the French on the 15-17 july on clay in Moscow for the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup. The 2005 Australian Open winner, after doubting of his participation (is it the word ?) was selected with Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev. The members of the French team will be known today. Yeah, Marat will be there... Watching ! I think it's better if he doesn't play, if he needs a surgery for his knee. So go on guy and support your friends !
