:PWell, as expected he lost early in this tournament as before. Really poor serve and forehand :-/but at least displayed some pretty good stuff from backhand. May be next year Marat should consider skipping Dubai, Indiana Wells and Miami to save energy .

Sorry I can't help venting . Though Marat played poorly today, he still should and could have won it. With all the respects to Dent, Marat is a far better player. His loss was largely mental. EVERYTIME when he fails to convert several breakpoints, he will get broken in his own service game. There is also a BIG problem for him to seize the momemtum of the match. Can/Will he ever improve all these? Sad to say it but I don't think so to be frank . It's also sad to say that he is the most vulnerable one who is going to drop out of the top 4 if he keeps playing like this . I hate to say it but Federer is FAR BETTER than Marat mentally as Federer can win even he plays poorly and this is the critical element for a great player. Sorry for so much grumbling .May be he started this year too well and so I just could not adjust my feelings promptly enough after the big win in AO.

Well we are all grumpy and grumbly today I guess but as nicki had said it was to be expected. Yes, he is a better player than Dent but he is also the most unpredictable player on the face of this planet. Mentally he is in much better condition than he was a year ago but still a long long way to go till he truly anf fully believes in himself and stoppes losing his energy on unnecessary outbursts of temper. But then again, he is a human being like all of us with his feelings and temper and all. So I think one of the things we can all do here is just wish him luck for the next tournament, back him up as much as we can and have faith in him for ourselves and for himself. You'll see our day will soon come again

I just got home from attending this match and I'm really steamed. Three hours up and three hours back to Orange County because of freeway closures. The ride home was particularly tense because of Safin's horrendous performance. I can't believe I went all the way to Indian Wells for that. Every error he whined and pouted to Lundgren. Almost every shot he was shaking his head in disgust. He went through four rackets the first set. The people around me felt like he tanked the last couple of games completely. It was over so quickly. I was embarrassed for him............then I had the long drive home. Learned a lesson.... it's better on TV. Hope he does better. Dinera was sitting with Lundgren and I kept thinking how he scolded her to fight more. He should listen to his own advice. Oh well.......................

Yeah well, it's easy to say when we're just spectators. Noone knows what he felt like, we can only guess. He is only human and he can't always play well, there are plenty of factors that influence the game and a human factor is the most important one. It's just a game after all and he is just a 25 year old doing his thing. Sometimes he manages, sometimes he doesn't...just like all of us. And that, my friends, is what we call life.

Here goes the official report from PacificLife website
Dent Fires Into Last 16
The impressive start to the season for Taylor Dent continues. The American has caused the biggest upset of the men's draw at the Pacific Life Open by beating the fourth seed and Australian Open champion Marat Safin in one hour 28 minutes, 7-5, 6-4.
The match played in the cool of the evening, saw Dent take the challenge to the Russian and kept pressuring him by coming into the net constantly. In fact Dent came to the net 60 times in the match and won 43 of those points. Dents first serve percentage was 50% for the match but he won a staggering 96% of those points.
"It's definitely up there among my biggest wins," said Dent "You know, beating Ferrero in the final when he was ranked like 2 in the world was big. Andy in the final of Memphis was big. Hewitt's a big win for me. There's a few of them, but he's up there."
Asked if he thought things might have slipped away when he failed to convert five break points, Dent said he didn't believe so as the pressure was on Safin's serve, while safin was not really being able to make a mark on Dent's serve.
"It was a little bit disappointing to not break those two games in a row, being up Love 40 and then 15 40," said Dent, "but that's tennis. I played some bad shots and he played some good shots, and that's just what happens. So I just, you know, do what you always do, you stick your head down and keep plugging away."
Safin regarded this match as one of the worst if not the worst of his career. He said there was nothing he could do right, nothing worked and he just didn't feel good about anything. It was one to be forgotten as far as he was concerned.
Dent is through to the last 16 where he will face the Argentine Guillermo Canas.
