very nice Jiat do you know why there's no pic of Marat with that tree in 2000? because in 2000 the ppl of the tournament had decided that they would give the winner only the Masters Seris trophy and stop giving the tree.... but finally in 2001 they decided to offer the winner this trophy again.... guys i have my pics, but it's a big disappointment! most of them are fuzzy! i don't know why, dunno what was wrong. I took like 25 pics of Marat, and only a few are good. I took a few pics of Canas, and most of them are good.......how unfair! right now i hate my camera!!!! ... anyway, i'll send the best ones to Ruth... but there are not a lot, sorry

This is the moment Stepanek chose to copy his mentor, Petr Korda, and to put a bandana round his head, perhaps to focus more. The headband also gave him a martial look, like a Samurai before the attack. (Chris and Myke ;D ) ;D ;D Yes, we're not the only ones who thought that was very weird

;D ;D Yes, we're not the only ones who thought that was very weird LOOOL I've translated that french article with the interview of Peter (bless him!) in it. here it goes: L’Equipe. 08/11/2004
PUTTING HIS HEAD THE RIGHT WAY ROUND
How did Marat Safin come out of the depths of despair since the US Open? Story by his coach, Peter Lundgren.
August, 31st. Marat Safin was kicked out of the US Open in the first round by Thomas Enqvist. He was a mere diaphanous shadow of his former shelf. “At the US Open he was at the very low ebb of his entire career, underlines Peter Lundgren, the volubile and ruddy Swedish Coach of the Russian. At the end of the match, he was down in the dumps. With Amit (Naor, one of his agents and one of his closest friends), we had a long talk and we convinced him that he could offer more to himself. We told him that if he didn’t put a lot of effort into his tennis, if he wasn’t a hundred per cent into it, then he would “draw a blank” again, and that it would happen more and more often. Therefore he changed his attitude and tried to enjoy being on court. Beijing helped a lot. He won a few matches, confidence came back, he started to find tennis amusing again (smile) … And he won his first tournament within two years.”One week after this win in Beijing, Safin nearly beat Roddick in the semi-final in Bangkok (6-7, 7-6, 6-7). This partial victory strengthened his convictions. “Suddenly he realized that he was finally playing up to his standard, Lundgren says. But it was in Madrid that everything gathered pace. When we were there, before the tournament began, we had a very bad training session. Balls and rackets were already flying after five minutes… So I spoke very frankly with him: “You know why you’re unable to keep any ball in the court when you’re playing a match or when you’re practising? It’s simply because you’re not focused.” I suddenly found out I had touched the right chord. He hit the ball for another hour with Tommy Haas and he played very well. I told him: “You see? When you’re focused you play very well! Don’t let stupid things get to you! Take it easy!” And he won the tournament showing a perfect attitude on court”. Bercy should better watch out. “His composure is the key of his game”With his gangling cowboy look Safin can convey the image of a gifted player, but a dilettante… especially when practising. An image which is immediately brushed aside by Lundgren: “The problem wasn’t about the quality of his training, it was a mental problem, Lundgren explains. And his composure is the key of his game. When entering a court he used to be so angry against himself that he couldn’t control himself. He wouldn’t accept that he could make errors. And that’s impossible: when you are too negative about yourself, you can’t play tennis correctly. The problem with Marat is that you can’t start from scratch again and tell him to hit only forehands for an hour, and then only backhands for another hour. He is so talented… If you ask him to hit four hundred forehands in a row, it won’t help him, it will drive him nuts! Marat is like Roger (Federer): the approach has to be different. With very talented players, you have to work on their mental state above all. It’s all about their attitudes, not their shots”.Things have turned out even more fine with the addition of two stimuli: “First there was the Masters, Lundgren explains. Being able to qualify for Houston helped a lot for his motivation. This is why Beijing has been a decisive step in the right direction. By reaping the points given to the winner, he understood that the goal was attainable. Then came Bercy. Here the surface suits him perfectly. It is ideal because balls bounce at the very good height, neither too high nor too low. He loves the crowd, he won three times here and he was a finalist once… It’s full of good vibrations. Each player has his favourite tournaments. For Marat, Bercy is one of them.”<br>Vincent Cognet

little note from french magazine Court Central: Pioline re-enlists for MaratCo-director of BNP Paribas Masters hasn't hesitate to take his old racket and play with his friend Marat Safin. Before his semi-final against Guillermo Canas, the Russian was looking for a sparring-partner and had no choice but asking the former French #1 player to train with him. Other French players were all away from Bercy because they were engaged in the first day of the French clubs championship. And Marat insisted on hitting the ball with a Frenchie. The article doesn't say why ... so don't ask me! ;D
