World No.1 and Swiss top seed Roger Federer has claimed his third Grand Slam title of the year, thrashing Australian fourth seed Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets to add the US Open to his Australian Open and Wimbledon triumphs.
Having beaten Hewitt on the way to his titles at Melbourne Park and the All England Club earlier in 2004, Federer made it four straight wins against the South Australian with his impressive 6-0 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 victory.
Hewitt went into the match without dropping a set in six previous outings in the tournament, but it was Federer who thrilled the Flushing Meadows crowd with his supreme play early, as Hewitt struggled with his own game.
Federer raced through the set in just 18 minutes without conceding a game, and when he broke Hewitt for a fourth time in the opening game of the second set on the way to a 2-0 advantage, an absolute rout was on the cards.
Hewitt did finally get on the scoreboard in the ninth game as the elapsed match time ticked over to 30 minutes, and he lifted noticeably as the set wore on, but Federer was still able to serve for it in the 10th game.
After missing an earlier break point chance when a backhand caught the net and landed wide, Hewitt finally did claim what could have proved to be a pivotal break, but Federer's response was swift, the dual Wimbledon champion taking the set in a tie-breaker.
And his momentum continued on into the third set, Federer not conceding another game before falling on his back as he came to realise what he had achieved.
Having won the US Open in 2001 when he defeated American Pete Sampras, Hewitt's last win over Federer now dates back to September 2003, when he rallied from two sets and a break down in the third set in the Davis Cup semi-final in Melbourne.
On that occasion Hewitt's win in the fourth rubber sealed Australia's passage to the final, where it went on to take the teams title, but since then Federer has exacted plenty of revenge for his collapse.
Having also beaten Hewitt's compatriot Mark Philippoussis to win the Wimbledon trophy for the first time last year, 23-year-old Federer needs only to win the French Open to complete his Grand Slam set.

Kuznetsova claims title
Svetlana Kuznetsova has beaten fellow-Russian Elena Dementieva in straight sets to win the women's US Open title at Flushing Meadows.
Kuznetsova dropped service games in both sets but, on each occasion, was able to recover before going on to win the match 6-3 7-5.
Following on from Anastasia Myskina's victory in the French Open and Maria Sharapova's success at Wimbledon, Kuznetsova becomes the third consecutive Russian woman to claim a Grand Slam title.
Dementieva earned her place in the final with gripping three-set victories over French star Amelie Mauresmo and American crowd favourite Jennifer Capriati.
However throughout the tournament the sixth seed has struggled with her suspect serve and Kuznetsova attacked her opponent's main weakness at every opportunity.
Seeded ninth, Kuznetsova hammered out 35 winners for the match, the majority of which came off her powerful forehand and, at times in the first set, Dementieva struggled to stay in the contest.
After securing the first set, the ninth seed began to make errors of her own as the pressure began to tell and on two occasions Dementieva gained a service break.
However the 19-year-old fought back to level the set and at 5-5 secured the break she needed as Dementieva's serve fell to pieces.
Kuznetsova raced to a 40-0 lead in the 12th game and, after sending one forehand wide, served out to claim the title.
