Nadal overcomes Hewitt, sets up Moya clash
Two-time champion Rafael Nadal moved a step closer towards his hat-trick of the French Open title as the bull-like youngster shattered late comeback from Australian Lleyton Hewitt to advance into the quarterfinals on Monday.
Nadal looked on course for another win after conceding just four games to Hewitt in the opening two sets, but he had to combat some tough moments in the third before closing out at 6-3, 6-1, 7-6.
With the win, the second seeded Nadal extended his unbeaten record at Roland Garros to an incredible 18 games and he will now be able to make it 19 with a last eight clash against fellow Mallorcan Carlos Moya.
And Nadal was the third Spaniard to reach this year's quarterfinals, joining Moya and Tommy Robredo, who will play top seed Roger Federer.
Carlos Moya, who clinched the 1998 French Open title over another Spaniard Alex Corretja, won the battle of the oldest players in the fourth round draw, knocking out 35-year-old Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 7-5.
The 23rd seed Moya fought back from a 5-2 first set deficit to take control in the opening set. He then broke serve in the sixth game of the second set en route to his fifth win against Bjorkman.
At 30 years and 287 days, Moya is the oldest man to reach the quarterfinals since Andre Agassi in 2003. Moya lost in the last eight in 2003 and 2004.

Carlos lost to Rafa 4-6, 3-6. 0-6. at 1/4 final PARIS ¡ª Carlos Moya was glad to rediscover his game at the French Open. Where had it been? ¡°Well,¡± he said Wednesday, ¡°it disappeared for a couple of years.¡± The former French Open champion was once ranked No. 1, but until he made a run at Roland Garros this year he hadn¡¯t been to the quarter-finals at a major since 2004. Trying to become the oldest French Open men¡¯s semifinalist since Jimmy Connors in 1985, the 30-year-old Moya lost to Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in the quarter-finals Wednesday. ¡°He played a very good tournament,¡± Nadal said. ¡°I¡¯m very happy for him, because he¡¯s coming back ... to his best level, no?¡± In addition to his 1998 French Open title, Moya reached the final at the 1997 Australian Open and the semifinals at the 1998 U.S. Open. But his ranking slid from No. 5 at the end of 2004 to No. 43 at the end of last year. ¡°I always believed that I had a lot of tennis inside of me that didn¡¯t come out yet,¡± Moya said. ¡°And now it looks like finally this tennis is coming out.¡± Still, i am very very proud of you! Vamos for Wimby and the rest of season!

Moya ousts defending champ Wawrinka
Defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka was eliminated in the first round of the Croatia Open by former four-time winner Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday.
Also, the return of local star Ivan Ljubicic as the third seed lasted only two hours as he lost to Andrei Pavel of Romania 7-6 (5), 7-5 for the first time in six years.
Ljubicic, a two-time champ, on the tour this year was making his first appearance in Umag since 2002.
Wawrinka, a finalist last week in Stuttgart, found sympathy from Moya, who has played Stuttgart five times but not since 2003.
Moya was in Amersfoort, Netherlands last week, reaching his fourth straight quarterfinals on clay.
"I am also very pleased with my form," sixth-seeded Moya said.
In the absence of Rafael Nadal, who stopped Moya in the last eight at Roland Garros, Moya quipped "now I can win" in Umag, where he triumphed in 1996, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Moya has a record of 39-8 in Umag.
Fourth-seeded David Ferrer swiftly moved into the second round ousting fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-2, and 2004 champ Guillermo Canas of Argentina downed wild card Roko Karanusic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3.
Number 7-seeded Filippo Volandri ousted Czech Lukas Dlouhy 6-2, 6-1 and Robin Haase of the Netherlands defeated Felix Mantilla of Spain 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Also advancing were Jose Acasuso of Argentina, Mischa Zverev of Germany, qualifier Viktor Troicki of Serbia, and Victor Hanescu of Romania, who was leading 2-0 when eighth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia retired because of rib pain.

Four-time winner Carlos Moya beat defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka in the first round of the Studena Croatia Open on Tuesday.
The match of the day in Umag was delayed by rain, but when the players did get on to court Moya dismantled his Swiss opponent, winning 6-3 6-2.
Wawrinka, who finished runner-up in Stuttgart to Rafael Nadal last week, had no answers to Moya's baseline game and duly slumped.
There was also an early exit for local hero Ivan Ljubicic.
Romanian Andrei Pavel upset the third seed 7-6 (7/5) 7-5 in the opening round, making the most of Ljubicic's preference for a faster surface.
However, other seeds did not have such trouble.
David Ferrer, seeded four, beat fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-2 6-2, while seventh seed and former finalist Filippo Volandri coasted to a 6-2 6-1 victory over Lukas Dlouhy.
In earlier matches, fifth seed Guillermo Canas, the 2004 winner, posted a 6-3 6-3 victory over wildcard Roko Karanusic of Serbia, while his fellow Argentinian Jose Acasuso rolled to a 6-2 6-0 triumph over Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France.

Fourth seed David Ferrer set-up a quarter-final meeting with sixth seed Carlos Moya at the Studena Croatia Open after completing a 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 victory over Jose Acasuso on Thursday.
Ferrer, who reached his first ATP final in Umag five years ago before losing to Moya, converted all three break point opportunities while he saved six of nine break points on his serve.
The two-time ATP winner this season collected his 40th match win of the season for the third straight year.
Ferrer is 0-4 lifetime against countryman Moya on clay, but the 25-year-old has won the the last two meetings on hard courts.
Four-time Umag winner Moya improved his career record in Umag to 40-8 with a 6-0 6-3 quickfire victory over Spanish qualifier Pere Riba
Filippo Volandri also advanced to the Umag quarter-finals for the fifth straight year with a 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 victory over left-hander Mischa Zverev.
Zverev served for the first set at 6-5 but was broken before Volandri won the last five points in the tie-break.
Volandri broke in the 11th game of the second set and then served out the match as he improved his career record in Umag to 16-4 to set-up a meeting with Romanian Andrei Pavel.
Pavel advanced to his first ATP quarter-final since Gstaad in July last year as he defeated Dutch number one Robin Haase 7-5 6-4.
The 33-year-old Romanian converted three of seven break points in the one hour and 28 minute match, while Haase made only one of four.
On Friday, Serbian qualifier Viktor Troicki will face Carlos Berlocq in the quarter-finals while fifth seed Guillermo Canas will meet Frenchman Gilles Simon.
