Oh no, like last year Roger can't play at Madrid and even not at Basel, his home tournament, , according to eurosport seems to be a serious injury, which could happend all the time "Federer has phoned today to tell me that he suffered an injury while trying to hit a drive," tournament director Manolo Santana said on the event's website. "He has a strong injury in his right ankle, so he won't play in Madrid. He is walking on crutches." from eurosport: Federer's doctors said the Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion was also expected to pull out of the following week's ATP tournament in his home city of Basel, an event he has yet to win. Federer missed last year's Madrid Masters because of fatigue. He also missed the Basel event last year after rupturing a thigh muscle on the tournament's opening day. His doctors said the Swiss might also be ruled out of the Paris Masters, which starts on October 31, but could be fit to defend the season-ending Masters Cup event in Shanghai.

from Roger's official site
ATP - INJURED ROGER WILL MISS MADRID AND BASEL
Roger injured a ligament in his right foot during training and will miss at least two weeks of tournaments. He was hurt in training while he tried to hit a forehand drive shot. Now he is walking with crutches. The mishap will keep Roger out of action for up to three weeks. Roger is likely to miss next week's Madrid Masters. He will also miss his home event, the Swiss Indoors in Basel. "After bad luck last year with my thigh and now this. I'm extremely disappointed, above all that I can't play at home for the second straight year in Basel. But I'm hoping to go to Shanghai again perfectly fit," said Roger. Medical opinion is optimistic that Roger will be fit for the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai from November 13-20.

Shame Marat will not be at madrid, as he could easily have won it. Interesting to see who will win in Madrid. Maybe we will Marat and Roger at Bercy.

Federer Prepares to Capture Shanghai Crown
Federer is back on the court again.World No.1 Roger Federer will be the earliest player to arrive in preparation for the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, the culminating event of the men’s professional tennis circuit to take place at Qi Zhong Stadium from November 13-20.
Federer sustained a severe ankle injury three weeks ago while practicing in Switzerland. However, he has made a strong recovery and is keen to defend his Masters Cup title.
"A few weeks ago I was not sure how quickly my ankle would recover but now I am on the court and playing again,” said Federer. “I go to Shanghai with a fresh mind and really look forward to defending the TMC title. I was in Shanghai to launch TMC at the Qi Zhong Stadium in early October, and it is truly a spectacular venue, and of course it is great seeing the Chinese fans as they are so enthusiastic."
The two-time defending Tennis Masters Cup champion, who defeated Lleyton Hewitt in the 2004 final and Andre Agassi in the 2003 final, will be making his fourth consecutive appearance in the circuit finale. Last year in Houston, Federer went undefeated through the circuit finale and improved his record at the event to 13-1.
Federer clinched the year-end World No. 1 ranking in Bangkok earlier this month, and carries a 77-3 match record in 2005. Despite missing the final three weeks of the regular season, he still won an ATP-best 11 titles (tied with Rafael Nadal), including an unprecedented four ATP Masters Series titles. He also became the first man since 1938 to win both Wimbledon and US Open titles in consecutive years and extended his unbeaten record in finals to 24 matches – a streak dating back to October 2003.
Tournament director Brad Drewett said: "The Tennis Masters Cup Organizing Committee is very pleased Roger Federer has recovered from a recent injury and will be taking his place in the elite Tennis Masters Cup field. Roger was voted most popular tennis player in China and I know his many fans in China are looking forward to seeing him defend his title in the magnificent, new Qi Zhong Stadium."
Federer will be joined in Shanghai by Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, two-time Tennis Masters Cup champion Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Guillermo Coria. The remaining spots in the elite eight-men field will be determined this week at BNP Paribas Masters.
