Why did he retire? Hopefully it isn't his wrist again.

An article about Dima from Roland Garros website Portrait: Dmitry TursunovWednesday, May 30, 2007 By Benjamin AdlerDmitry Tursunov has been making a name for himself these past 12 months with the blog he has been writing on the official ATP website: (http://www.atptennis.com/5/en/blog/tursunov/11.asp). As we arrived for our appointment with Tursunov, a dozen children were gathered around him while he signed autographs on magazines, tee-shirts and oversized yellow balls. The signing session should have been long over, but the likeable Russian was making sure no-one went away disappointed. "If only they were all like that," sighed an ATP official. "We aren’t robots"The Gorin Academy protégé’s blog has only been up and running for a year, but already it has surpassed all initial expectations, even becoming a hit on the Tour itself. "I didn’t really have any plan when I started off, and I didn’t expect it to take off like this. I started writing it at Estoril last season, before the ATP decided to put players’ blogs on its site," the king of the web on the men’s tour tells us. "Originally there was meant to be one a week and Ljubicic got things rolling. When it came to my turn I didn’t really know what to write so I had a quick look at some of the other blogs. I thought it would be good to do something a little different. It also gave me a chance to show that players do other things apart from just train and play matches. It’s a good way to express your personality, to show people we aren’t robots," adds Tursunov, the man who sealed Russia’s Davis Cup win over France in Pau last year by defeating Richard Gasquet in five sets. "It’s like when Roger’s on court"Having left Moscow as a 12-year-old bound for Vitaly Gorin’s tennis academy in Sacramento, California, Dmitry speaks flawlessly fluent English without a trace of a Russian accent, a smile permanently poised at the corner of his mouth. Little wonder then that his blog has caught the imagination of more than an inquisitive reader or two, not all of them tennis fans it might be added. "I get a lot of requests, and when I’m in town for a tournament, people always ask me about it. There’s a lot of expectation about the blog now and I really don’t want to let people down. It’s difficult to keep producing the quality, though. It’s a bit like when Roger’s on court – everybody expects him to play a great game because he’s set such high standards," continues the man who first made a name for himself by stunning fellow-countryman Marat Safin in the first round at Wimbledon in 2004. Having agreed to provide the ATP with an instalment every month, the question that needs to be asked is whether the hard-hitting right-hander bit off more than he could chew. The man himself seems to agree. "As luck would have it there were lots of things going on at Estoril, which made it easier to write funny things. Sometimes, though, life on the Tour can be unexciting, even boring. There’s not much to say at times like that." The end of the blog?In fact, even though his bright idea has not changed players’ opinions towards him ("Everyone knows each other in the locker room. You know who the clowns are and who aren’t"), Dmitry has decided to take to a breather. "I’ve put the blog on hold for three months or so, and I don’t know if I’ll go back to it or not. I prefer to quit while it’s still good, and I don't really have enough info to carry on with it right now. If I do decide to keep going, it’ll be because I want to make it better, perhaps move into video. I don’t know yet. I haven’t set a deadline for deciding yet, but I’m sure I’ll have a better idea come August or September." Given that his family back home do not speak English, the Dmitry Show is not a topic of conversation in the Tursunov household, although the player sometimes finds time to chat about it with his two closest companions on the Tour, the Igors, Andreev and Kunitsyn. Even then, as the Russian acknowledges, there is little time for friendship on the Tour: "It’s hard to build real friendships on the Tour. There’s always that competitive thing between us and that doesn’t help." Whatever the fate of the Tursunov blog, however, there can be little doubt who is the Net’s Number One.

from Queen's tourney site ... Tursunov Turns Entertainer on Gabby Logan Radio Show Russian star Dmitry Tursunov has become famous throughout the world of tennis almost as much for his tales on tour as his results on the court. Described as the “Richard Prior of Blogging,” for his regular features on ATPtennis.com, the World No. 24 spent time away from his 2007 Artois Championships preparation to talk to BBC Radio Five Live’s Gabby Logan on Saturday morning. Logan opened the show by saying she wanted someone from the Artois Championships to give her an insight into tennis, and what she got was someone who spent time blogging and gossiping, which she described as being “right up my street.” “We’ll do anything for money, so you can have me for the rest of the week if you want,” joked Tursunov, whose quick wit and dark sense of humour had Logan laughing throughout the interview. Tursunov’s blog has been more popular among fans than either Roger Federer’s or Rafael Nadal’s, and when asked about it by Logan, the American-based Russian replied: “Blonds have more fun, right?” However, he admitted that without wanting to risk the wrath of his fellow professionals, “there’s a fine line between gossip and saying something that’s private to the other players.” The 24-year-old, who is making his fourth appearance at The Queen’s Club having reached the quarterfinals last year before losing to Britain’s Tim Henman, talked to Logan about dancing in the shower, his knowledge of all things Scottish, and the presenter’s rugby playing husband, Kenny Logan. “I hear rugby players are not very well…endowed,” he laughed. Logan also pointed out to listeners that Tursunov was particularly distracted when travel presenter Lynsey Horne entered the room. “Why is she naked?” Tursunov asked. -> hear the interview here: www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/fivelive_aod.shtml?fivelive/dmitri ;D
