PRO-AM-2005: VALENTINA MATVIENKO AND MIKHAIL YOUZHNY’S FABULOUS WIN
Today the Central Court of the St. Petersburg Open-2005 hosted the first PRO-AM match played by two amateurs and two professionals.
The Governour of St. Petersburg Valentina Matvienko participates in the tournament the second year in a row. This time she played in tandem with the defending St. Petersburg Open champion Mikhail Youzhny against Sergey Tarasov, St. Petersburg Vice Governour, and Thomas Johansson (winner of St. Petersburg Open-1997 and AUSTRALIAN OPEN-2002).
From the very beginning the duet Matvienko/Youzhny were more than determined to win: they simply whitewashed the first game. In the forth game Matvienko/Youzhny broke for the first time mostly thanks to a masterful drop-volley placed by Valentina Matvienko resulting in 3:1 on the scoreboard. By the way, during the match Matvienko demonstrated almost all modern tennis strokes: 100% first serve placement, deep down-the-line and passing shots as well as drop-volleys. Coupled with a steady Mikhail Youzhny’s tennis, it determined the 6:3 outcome of the first set. Sergey Tarasov excited by the match made a few unforced errors that helped the Matvienko/Youzhny tandem.
The forth game of the second set saw the culmination of the Matvienko/Youzhny tandem. With 4:0 on the scoreboard, the international duet Tarasov/Johansson after claiming their first game managed to concentrate on the match and bring the score to 5:4 (ad. Matvienko/Youzhny). The drop-volley placed by Sergey Tarasov in the eighth game off-balanced both the Governour and Mikhail Youzhny and won Tarasov/Johansson another break.
Nevertheless, Matvienko/Youzhny had enough scores to post a fabulous 6:3, 6:4 win.
As Valentina Matvienko put it, it was a genuine pleasure to play with Mikhail Youzhny like with any other professional. "Mikhail stood by me all the time and I also tried not to lose time. Such matches for me is a serious challenge. I think one should strive to win in all spheres of life, both in politics and in sport," added Valentina Matvienko.
The Swedish player Thomas Johansson confessed that he was impressed by Valentina Matvienko’s tennis and her drop-volleys.
Igor Dzelepov, Vice President of the Northwest Federation of Tennis and the personal coach of Valentina Matvienko, noted that despite her tough agenda Valentina Matvienko spends 2-3 hours a week playing tennis. He also added that the Governour takes part in almost all show matches and intensively trains for each of them.
