From sport.scotsman.com/tennis.cfm?id=535572007Youzhny's epic win draws Russia level with France RUSSIA and France were tied at one rubber apiece after the first day of their Davis Cup world group quarter-final in Moscow yesterday: Paul-Henri Mathieu beat world No 4 Nikolay Davydenko 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 to give France a 1-0 lead over defending champions Russia. After Davydenko had swept through the first set, Mathieu bounced back with a vengeance, firing short, sharp strokes to level the score. The Frenchman, ranked 56th in the world, kicked off the third set by sending the ball skilfully all around the court and forcing Davydenko to chase it. Looking exasperated, the hosts' highest-ranked player upped his game but it was too late to make a difference and Davydenko lost a tense fourth set. However, Mikhail Youzhny scraped the holders level when he overcame Richard Gasquet in an epic battle, eventually winning 6-2, 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, 8-6. In the other quarters, Thomas Johansson and Robin Soderling gave Sweden a commanding 2-0 lead in their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final against Argentina in closely-fought matches that featured a total of five tie-breaks. Johansson stunned Argentine No 1 David Nalbandian 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6, while Soderling beat teenager Juan-Martin Del Potro 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. Germany's Tommy Haas came from behind to defeat Belgium's Kristof Vliegen 6-7, 7-5 6-4, 6-2 to put the visitors 1-0 up. The final tie between United States and Spain was due to get under way later last night. ;D

Eighth-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer took out last year's Munich runner-up Olivier Rochus 6-2, 6-4. Rochus topped his countryman Kristof Vliegen in last year's rare all-Belgian final.
