www.metronews.ca/storyCP.aspx?pg=./k123109A.xmlDavydenko, top seed at Qatar, looking ahead to Australian Open DOHA, Qatar (AP) - Nikolay Davydenko wants to use the Qatar Open to boost his confidence ahead of the Australian Open. "This is the first tournament of the year and I am just looking to play well and gain in confidence ahead of the Australian Open," the 25-year-old Russian said. The Qatar Open starts Monday in Doha, while the Australian Open begins in Melbourne on Jan. 15. Davydenko, who plays No. 49 South Korea's Lee Hyung-taik in his opening match, has rested after a busy season. That included being part of Russia's victorious Davis Cup team against Argentina in December. "It was a bit hectic last year, but I feel fresh after the break and am looking forward to the season," Davydenko said. Defending champion and world No. 1 Roger Federer is absent from the one million-dollar tournament in this Persian Gulf city. Federer beat Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 7-6 (5) in last year's final. Monfils is playing again but was doubtful he can match his performance. "The field is very tough, there are too many good players," Monfils said. That field includes second-seed and world No. 5 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia. Tommy Haas of Germany was the original third seed but withdrew injured. Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, who lost to Federer in the Australian Open final, is now seeded third. Other seeds include Britain's Andy Murray (4), Russia's Mikhail Youzhny (5), Robin Sonderling of Sweden (6), Sebastien Grosjean of France (7) and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland

yesterday i watched Kolya's match against Spadea live. This was the 1st time i ever watched tennis live and boy i was pumped. It was a bit disappointing to see centre court was half empty with patches of empty seats everywhere, considering since Nadia Petrova's retirement from the previous match pushed Kolya's match up to an earlier time. But, i guess everyone yesterday came to see Nadal. So understandably, after Nadal retired, most ppl went out to watch other matches on outside court or went home. Now, about Kolya's match itself. What could i say but...WTF KOLYA!!! in the 1st set. He was soo not concentrating and his EU piled up to a mountain (I'm quite an exaggerator hehehe ). I was on the brink of desperation. I kept screamin' "C'mon Nikolay!!!", cos no one clapped for him (prob only 2-3 ppl incl me), and just a handful of ppl were supporting Vince. The start of 2nd set , me and my friend already felt our stomach complaining (it was 8pm afterall), so we decided to go out to have some nachos. By the time we came back, the door to the stadium was still closed and when i asked the lady guarding the door about the score, she said Vince was leading. I was so glad she didn't know what she had been talking about!. The door finally opened and i found out Kolya took the 2nd set. My friend was like "we missed the whole set??!!! How did that happen?" From then on, things went really2 exciting. More ppl started to yell "Davydenko!!", or "GO NIKOLAY!!" or " something something (incomprehensible Russian) Kolya!!". There was this funny guy, didn't know who to support, so he decided to go with "C'mon Spadenko!!" ;D ;D. There was one point where Vince thought the ball was waaay out, but no call from the linesmen. and he started to scream out loud and cursing and questioning not the line judge but the official standing beside the court. Game point, Kolya hit a forehand that touched the net, bounced and dropped dead to the ground and Vince threw his racket to the net. Since then, everybody in the court seemed to support Kolya (except a foolish man sitting a few row behind me and a girl on the opposite side of the stadium that always yelled "Go USA". The rest of the story, well the scores kinda tell you all. i'm not good at story telling, so pls excuse my incomprehensiveness and rambling. Like i said, this is my 1st time and i am still too excited ;D, so i chose to share. I hvnt uploaded the pics from the match to my comp cos my comp decided to freeze, but i will as soon as it works again. THX for reading!
