Hingis confirms Gold Coast return
Martina Hingis will make her return to competitive tennis on New Year's Day on Australia's Gold Coast. Hingis said: "I know I'll get some tough matches and it will allow me to get used to the Australian summer coming from the European winter."
Hingis, who retired due to injury in 2002, announced last month she planned to return to professional tennis.
Maria Sharapova is among the other entries at the Australian women's hardcourt tournament at Royal Pines.
Three-time Australian Open champion Hingis hopes to make her Grand Slam comeback in Melbourne next month.
The 25-year-old Swiss star has been offered a wildcard for the Australian Open.
Hingis says she is ready to challenge the world's best players, despite a three-year absence caused by a string of foot, heel and ankle problems.
She said: "When you've been number one for four years, that's all you want - to compete with the best and possibly win grand slams.
I would love to be world number one again, but I can only see if that's possible once I start competing."
Hingis said she was relishing the chance to test herself against the players who have succeeded in her absence.
"When people ask me who I really want to play, I always say Sharapova.
"Firstly, because she's the only one I haven't played, but also because she's won Wimbledon and been number one herself, so she's probably the young girl to aim for right now.
"When I look at the rest of the top 10 and see that Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce, Amelie Mauresmo and the Belgian girls (Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin) are still at the top, that definitely gives me hope."
Hingis, who won the last of her three straight Australian Open titles in 1999, has dropped out of the WTA rankings and needs wild card invitations to play.

Hingis set to head up Tokyo field
Former world number one Martina Hingis will continue her return to competitive tennis with the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo at the end of January. But the 25-year-old Swiss faces stiff competition from current world number one Lindsay Davenport and Russia's Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova said: "Martina's return gives a lot of excitement to the game.
"Definitely she hasn't played for a long time, but I think everyone is very excited."
Hingis will make her return to competitive tennis on New Year's Day on Australia's Gold Coast.
But following that and the Australian Open, where she has been offered a wildcard, she will compete in the $1.3m Tokyo event, which Sharapova won last year.

HINGIS: I'M TAKING A RISK IN RETURNING
Martina Hingis admits she has a "love for a challenge" as she prepares to return to the WTA Tour. The 25-year-old recently announced her plans to make a comeback after retiring three years ago due to ankle and foot injuries.
Hingis concedes that she is taking a risk in making the decision to play again, although she insists it is the right decision after missing the game so much since she opted to pack it in.
"I've had a very nice quiet life back home without the stress and the travel but I miss playing," she said. "I miss the game.
"I'm taking a risk but I'm willing to take it.
"I love the challenge and If I can survive, great, but if not it's not a drama. There's worse things that can happen to me."
Hingis is currently busy putting in the hours of practice as she looks to make an impact on her return to the court at the start of 2006.
The Swiss star is concentrating on developing an excellent service game as well as her physical fitness ahead of her first tournament on the Gold Coast.
"I've been trying to work on my whole game, baseline and serve," Hingis said.
"You have to grow with the game and you have to get better physically and tennis wise.
"You have to have a serve to be able to survive today and we'll see If I can bring it on."

Hingis captured 36 doubles titles during her career, including nine Grand Slam doubles victories, and Golovin won the french Open mixed doubles title with Richard Gasquet in 2004.
The pair have drawn a difficult first match, facing Athens doubles gold medallist and fourth seeds Tiantian Sun and Ting Li of China.

Nervy Hingis makes winning return
Martina Hingis made a successful return to professional tennis with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Maria Vento-Kabchi at the Australian Hardcourt Championships. The 25-year-old Swiss, who retired in 2002 with foot and ankle injuries, dropped her serve in the first game but then blew the Venezuelan away.
"I was a little nervous," admitted the former world number one, who has won five Grand Slam titles in her career.
She will now face Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic in the second round.
Asked whether she was concerned by her nervous start, Hingis responded: "Not really. I knew I could play better than that.
"It was just a matter of time and getting the first point and the first game. After that I started breathing.
"I don't know what else I should have done today better than what I did. The score says it all."
Hingis conceded she would have to improve if she is to challenge the top-ranked players but is in upbeat mood.
I get another opportunity to play another match and that feels great already," she said. "All these expectations I've put on myself, they are gone right now."
And the Swiss star, who served just one ace against Vento-Kabchi, vowed: "Just wait until the next matches, I'll be even better.
"You have to have a high percentage of first serves otherwise these girls today are going to kill you. They're very aggressive and they attack right away."
Hingis is using the Gold Coast event and next week's Sydney International as warm-ups for the Australian Open, which starts on 16 January.
By god was it amazing to see her back playing again.C'mon Martina

Impressive Hingis into last eight
Martina Hingis' return to tennis continued in impressive style with a 6-3 6-2 win over Klara Koukalova at the Australian Hardcourt Championships. Seventh seed Koukalova, the world number 35, proved to be no match for Switzerland's former world number one.
The 25-year-old is through to the quarter-finals of her first tournament since announcing her full-time return to the WTA Tour after four years away.
She faces Nuria Llagostera Vives, who upset second seed Francesca Schiavone.
Hingis, who retired in 2002 with ankle, foot and heel injuries, took just 70 minutes to wrap up victory "One thing I realise is that some of the girls do have respect for me and when I see them I have to take advantage of it," she said.
"Maybe my reputation is helping and the other reason is that they don't know me. They haven't seen me around for three years and they don't know what to expect.
"What pleased me most about the win was the winning spirit which got me through, that I really wanted it more than her.
"We were both pretty flat towards the end. I just had more to give. The anticipation is coming back and every set I'm shaking off the rustiness of the last few years."
Earlier on Wednesday top seed and defending champion Patty Schnyder beat American qualifier Angela Haynes 6-3 6-0. The Swiss star will now meet the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova in the quarter-finals.
