Clijsters to miss US Open with wrist injury August 17, 2006 BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Defending champion Kim Clijsters will miss the U.S. Open because of a left wrist injury. A posting on her Web site Thursday said an MRI exam and X-ray showed the problem is worse than originally believed and that the Belgian will be sidelined for the coming weeks -- and probably two months, meaning she'll also miss the Fed Cup final in September. ADVERTISEMENT The U.S. Open starts Aug. 28. The No. 2-ranked Clijsters was forced to quit during the second set of her match Wednesday at the hard-court tournament in Montreal. She had the wrist taped early in that set, but then fell on the wrist while reaching for a shot. She'll return to Belgium for more tests, her Web site said. Clijsters missed most of the 2004 season after hurting her left wrist and having surgery on it in June of that year. She's dealt with assorted ankle, knee and back problems, too, and points to her health problems as a reason that she plans to retire in 2007, even though she's only 23. She arrived at last year's U.S. Open as the player considered by many to be the best currently on the WTA Tour never to have won a Grand Slam title. Clijsters had come close previously, finishing as the runner-up at four majors, including three out of four during one stretch. But she enjoyed two magical weeks at Flushing Meadows, beating Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova en route to the final, where she overwhelmed Mary Pierce 6-3, 6-1. Clijsters is 36-9 this year with two titles, plus semifinal appearances at the last two Grand Slam events, the French Open and Wimbledon. She also helped Belgium beat the United States in the Fed Cup semifinals last month. Belgium faces Italy in the Sept. 16-17 final.

i didnt realise that she wanted to retire...i cant belive it because she is so young ( only 23)....actually it saddens me....if it is because she so injury prone then i do feel that this is a great loss!!!!

Clijsters withdraws from US Open Clijsters, who is only 23, will retire at the end of this season Former champion Kim Clijsters has decided against playing at the US Open in her final year on tour. However, the 23-year-old Belgian, who has already pulled out of the French Open, plans to play both doubles and singles at Wimbledon.
"That way, I will be able to stay a bit longer at my last Grand Slam," she told her official website.
Clijsters, who has struggled with injuries during her career, will make her next outing in Warsaw on 30 April.
She complained of a sore back after making an early exit from the Sony Ericsson Open in March and has not yet resumed training.
"The will is not fully there yet, but I want to get used to clay again," she said.
Clijsters will get married to American basketball player Brian Lynch on 14 July in her hometown of Bree.
The final tournament of her career is expected to be the WTA event in Stuttgart from 1 October.

kim quits tennis. it's over. from her website in french www.sport.be/kimclijsters/fr/nieuws/kimsdagboek/excerpts : "Le Journal de Kim Merci ! 06-05-2007 Ce fut plus que beau. Les raquettes sont rangées. Après mes adieux fantastiques à Anvers, le feu s'était éteint. Il était donc temps de vous livrer un nouveau journal, pour vous, mes fans." she says the fire's died out, recall her best memories, says she's getting married on the 14th July, and also, that, although she's quitting tennis she plans to have a party or sth of the sort as a farewell to her fans. the news in english aren't updated yet, it seems, but it'll come and you'll get a proper translation

well eurosport's translated her message in this article : www.eurosport.com/tennis/wta-tour/2006-2007/sport_sto1156937.shtmlClijsters calls time Former world number one Kim Clijsters has retired with immediate effect. The 23-year-old Belgian, who is marrying American basketball player Brian Lynch in July, told her website: "It has been more than great. The rackets will be hung up." Clijsters has struggled with injury over the last few years and had said this season would be her last but had planned to play at Wimbledon. However the 2005 US Open champion lost her opening match at this week's Warsaw Cup to Julia Vakulenko and that seems to have hastened her decision. "After all my fantastic goodbyes in Antwerp [where she lost in the final to Amelie Mauresmo], the fire had died out," Clijsters said. "Every hour has been dedicated to my body, the difficulty of getting out of bed in the morning and heating up the muscles for an hour, the preparation for the marriage to Brian which is taking up more of my time - all of that made it very difficult to continue. "I would easily have been able to continue for a few months and to take part in the four most lucrative tournaments [the three Grand Slams and the WTA Tour Championships]. The money is certainly important but not the most important thing in my life. Health and my private life are more important. "I have great memories of my career: many victories in tournaments, Grand Slams in both singles and doubles, as well as being the world number one in singles and doubles. "Magnificent moments but less than I have gained from the other players, the exchanges between the Belgian and foreign supporters, the joy of the journey with handicapped people. Without also forgetting the all the awards I have received from the players who hold a special place in my heart. "But now it is time for a new life. Time for marriage. Time for children? And especially time for my family and friends. Not to travel anymore. Not to read lies in the newspapers anymore." Clijsters also reserved a special message for all the fans that have followed her around the world over the years and asked them to respect her privacy at the wedding. Thank you for all your support during the years," Clijsters said. "Thank you for your hundreds of thousands of letters, gifts and phone calls. Sorry to have made you leave your beds in the middle of the night to watch my matches. My wedding is set for July 14th. "Many of my fans have asked when and where it will be, but you must understand that this day will be a private affair. Only my friends and family will be present. "But I do not want this to be my goodbye to you. This is why I will invite you in September to a big festival. When and in what form, it is not decided yet but you will be informed in time via a newspaper and my website." Eurosport - - - 06/05/2007 14:00
