Dementieva Wins All-Russian Final For Ninth Career Title
DUBAI, UAE - No stranger to fighting back from a set down, Elena Dementieva claimed her ninth Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title on Saturday, beating countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova in the night-time final, 46 63 62.
In a draw that featured the world's Top 4, few people would have given the No.11-ranked Dementieva a shot at the outset of the week. But she would not disappoint, taking out Patty Schnyder and Alona Bondarenko in straight sets in the early rounds then notching come-from-behind wins over world No.3 Ana Ivanovic and Francesca Schiavone in the quarters and semis.
She came out slowly versus world No.2 Kuznetsova in the final, dropping the first two games of the match and eventually the first set, but the fighting spirit that has helped her claw her way back so many times in the past rose from the ashes once again and she would concede only five more games the rest of the way, eventually notching the three set championship victory over her fellow Russian.
"I think I was playing wrong tactically in the first set; I was hitting the ball too short," Dementieva said. "I realized I had to move her around more and not just stay back and hit crosscourt, and I had to step in more and go for my forehand winners. I became more aggressive and it worked. It was a great match and I was playing really well, probably my best match in a long time."
"I'm very disappointed - I had all sorts of chances today but I just couldn't take them," Kuznetsova said. "At the start of the match we were pretty even, but as the match went on my level kept dropping lower and lower. I began to try going for winners too early in the points and that just didn't work against her."
Dementieva has done well as an underdog in the past. Her wins over Ivanovic and Kuznetsova were her 35th and 36th career Top 10 wins - but perhaps more intriguingly they were her 15th and 16th Top 10 wins as a non-Top 10 player, having earned her first 13 before even breaking into the Top 10 and now three more since dropping out. But Top 10 wins aside, Dementieva will rise from No.11 to No.10 on the next rankings, her 198th career week inside the ultimate elite.
"The whole week I had such a bad draw; this tournament is really popular and so everyone had it like that, but I'm just happy I was able to play my best at the end of the week," Dementieva said. "In the past I was playing Paris and Antwerp and so I didn't make it here, but I heard so many good things about it from the other players and I came this year. And I have no regrets!"
While Dementieva improves to 9-11 lifetime in finals Kuznetsova is now 9-14, having lost seven of her last eight (her only win in that run coming at New Haven last August, where she was trailing Agnes Szavay in the final when the Hungarian succumbed to injury and retired from the match). Kuznetsova had a solid week in Dubai nonetheless, taking out longtime rivals Amélie Mauresmo and world No.4 Jelena Jankovic en route to her second career final at the Tier II event.
The 13th all-Russian Tour singles final wasn't the only match in the headlines; the biggest noise of the week was made in the quarterfinals as Schiavone pulled off a shock straight set win over world No.1 and four-time Dubai champ Justine Henin, ending the Belgian's unbeaten reign at the event (she was 17-0 here going into that one). And earlier on Saturday the No.1-ranked pair of Cara Black and Liezel Huber won its second title of the season, beating China's Yan Zi and Zheng Jie in the final, 75 62. It was the 14th title of their illustrious partnership
CONGRATS LENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woohooo ;D
