Kuznetsova knocks out Dementieva
Kuznetsova kept her cool before recording the victory
Former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated fellow Russian Elena Dementieva to reach the last four of the Pilot Pen event at New Haven.
In a repeat of the 2004 US Open final, Kuznetsova rallied from a break down in the third set to beat the third seed 6-3 3-6 6-2.
The fifth seed will next play second seed Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium.
The French Open champion, who is the second seed, easily overcame Italian Mara Santangelo 6-2 6-3.
The match between Kuznetsova and Dementieva contained 12 breaks of serve but also superb hitting from the baseline as the pair took turns to dominate.
Third seed Dementieva looked the favourite when she broke in the first game of the decider before Kuznetsova moved up a gear.
"I am very happy for the first and third sets but in the second set I don't know what happened," said Kuznetsova
"I just stopped and though I knew I was stopping, I couldn't do anything about it."
Dementieva said she had not been at her best.
"I felt like I was moving well, playing well, but the footwork, just the little steps, wasn't there today," she said.
"I just missed lots of balls in important moments. And then when I lost my serve in the third game of the third set. It is very difficult to come back."
