HELLO PIERCE CHENG! where have you been for so long? (Or was it that I was away for so long?)
Anyway, I'm going to take Damita's and everyone's side on the "blaming the opponent" issue.
You can't balme the opponent for the following reasons (please object against them point, by point if you disagree, because I'm more curius why "you have to blame the opponenent"):
1. Tennis is a professional sport and athletes get paid for winning matches. Also, athlete's get paid in accordance to their achievements, that is: the more one wins the more one gets paid. Now, everyone wants to get paid more that's why everyone tries to do their best to win matches. You can't expect a player to just stop trying to win because they got your favourite, or a great tennis player infront of them, can you (this is an actual question)? In fact if they stop "trying" to win matches, they would have to pay fines themselves! Who would want that?! Justine tried to defeat your favourite for this reason. She had no choice. You would have done the same wouln't you?
2. Tennis is also played for ranking points. The more you win the more points you earn, the higher you get in the rankings. SO: everybody tries to win more, everything to become No.1 in the world. Would you, for example give up such an opportunity, just because your favourite, or a supposed tennis "great " is infront of you? Tennis players try to be the best, and try to prove that they are the best. If they don't win, people don't think that they are the best. And that's correct, because the "BEST" wins everyone. In our case, Juju also wanted to prove that she is the best, just as your favourite...
3. Because it's not Justine's foult tha the opponent is NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN. THis is the truth. If Mary is getting older, what can the younger generation do with that? Nothing but play and defeat them. Also, if the opponent isn't as talented a player can't do anything about it. And when the opponent doesn't practice enough, one can't do much about it.
Let's take you for example when you are playing chess with a very smart opponent ( hypothetically). Suppose you just lost a match.... Do you say : "Oh that idiot is too smart! He should be a less smart so that I can win him!". Or do you say :" Oh I need to get a little smarter and finally win him. I should practice more so that my brains get as good as his" and a simple "I wish I was as smart as him". Surely you are a reasonable man. Surely, you would like to get better! Surely it'll be better when infront of everybody you can shout out "LOOK I JUST BEAT A CHESS GENIUS!". Surely it'll be BETTER THAN saying: "look I just beat a guy who is very dumb and doesn't know how to play chess properly"!
My point is: it is you (or your favourite) who should get better and not the opponent who should get worse. It's better in all ways. That is why, instead of blaming Justine Mary herself should try harder next time.
4. Let's see another situation: suppose everyone will follow your method and blame the opponent everytime he/she defeats their fave. What will happen then? Yes, correct: everyone will end up hating everyone around in just a couple of weeks. Players would hate all the other players on the tour and instead of playing they would just argue... They will sue eachother and instead of playing would be sitting in courts of law, shouting on eachother and fighting. Surely, YOU as a TENNIS FAN wouldn't want that! Surely you as a tennis fan would prefer that all players are in peace and harmony! Wouldn't you?! Or else, when Anna Kournikova plays Marry Pierce the next time they would hate eachother! And how is that possible! Oh no! YOU AS THEIR FAN would get frustrated! "Anna don't hate, insult, fight with Mary" you would say. Or else, God forbid, they'll hate eachother so bad that they kill eachother. Plus, in most religions hate is a sin! Anna and Mary might suffer very much from this!
As you can see from the above situation, your principle is unacceptable. Surely you agree?
5. Blaming someone else because you are miserable is unethical. Let's imagine yet another situation: you are playing chess and you win this time. But look at that: your opponent following your principle is saying: I wish you were dumb, so I could win you!". Would you like that? Surely you wouldn't, because as a regular person you would prefer if another person respects you. Laws of psychology state that.... Similarly, Justine Henin Hardenne wouldn't like Mary to blame her....
If Mary Pierce plays against Anna Kournikova, for example, what should they both do? Should they blame eachother if one of them wins?
Put Mary , Anna and their opponents in those situations and you'll see that nothing good comes out of it. Do you agree? Remember: If Mary Pierce plays against Anna Kournikova, for example, what should they both do? Should they blame eachother if one of them wins? NO! Should Anna hate Mary if Mary wins? NO! YOU AS MARY"S FAN wouldn't want Mary to be hated, would you?
There are more reaons, I just don't have time now, sorry Pheng. Maybe Damita will write them later...
In the mean time, please read my points and if you disagree with atleast ONE sentance from there, please quote it and write a reason why it is wrong. I mean... we are reasonable people who are open to all criticism; if we are wrong we want to correct our mistakes, do we? Atleast I want to be correct. Maybe all this is wrong, so please correct me. I want to know EVERY POINT WHERE I"M WRONG. Every single word. Knowing your opinion is very important for me... To think about it: writing this to you is more important than translating the Davis Cup interview of the Russian team! So please....
Okay, I gotta go now, do some home work.
