Agassi wins opener February 27, 2006
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Andre Agassi defeated Greg Rusedski 7-6 (4), 6-0 Monday in the opening round of the Dubai Open, showing no signs of a lower back strain.
The 35-year-old Agassi is playing only his second tournament of the season and third since his loss to Roger Federer in the final of the U.S. Open last September. Agassi pulled out of the SAP Open with a lower back injury earlier this month, and was sidelined by a sprained left ankle last fall.
"It's good to be back on the court healthy and excited," Agassi said. "I am still not as comfortable, and that will take a couple of matches. But what was important was that I was getting into good positions, which means I am moving well."
The eight-time Grand Slam champion served well and hit strong passing shots to improve to 9-2 against Rusedski. After a 3-3 tie in the first set, Agassi had a chance to break in the seventh game, but hit a wide-open volley wide.
"You don't get too many opportunities to break Greg's serve," he said. "It was the easiest of shots. I am thinking of some excuse as to why I hit that wide, but I really can't think of any."
After winning the first-set tiebreaker, Agassi needed only 21 minutes to win the second set.
ADVERTISEMENT "Once I got the break, I got into a better rhythm in the second set," Agassi said. "He did not serve a high percentage of first serves in and I was returning well."
Tim Henman moved into the second round with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Feliciano Lopez. Henman, who received a wild card when Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia withdrew because of a shoulder injury, rallied from 0-3 down in the second-set tiebreaker.
Henman, ranked No. 49, gained four match points before defeating the No. 39-ranked Spaniard.
"It was a good start for me," Henman said. "I just got in yesterday and could not prepare much. I played the first set solid, and he was making a lot of unforced errors."
Henman will face the winner of a match between Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic and qualifier John van Lottum of the Netherlands. Stepanek won the title last weekend in Rotterdam.
Fifth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain became the first seeded player to drop out, losing 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to Rainer Schuettler of Germany.
In other matches, Igor Andreev of Russia beat Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-4 and Robin Vik of the Czech Republic defeated qualifier Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia-Montenegro 6-2, 6-4.
Qualifier Ivo Klec of Slovakia advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Daniele Bracciali of Italy, while Olivier Rochus of Belgium defeated 2002 champion Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-1.
Rochus will meet either third-seeded Nikolay Davydenko or Marat Safin.
Top-seeded Federer plays his first match on Tuesday.
