Haas Wins Second Memphis Crown
Sixth-seeded German Tommy Haas clinched consecutive titles for the second time in his career when he defeated Swede Robin Soderling 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships Sunday. The former World No. 2, who also hoisted the Memphis trophy in 1999, proved too much for his opponent as he took the double-break in the second set to outdistance himself from the Swede. Haas served out the title win and coverted on his third match point to seal the victory in exactly one hour. Soderling had his chances to stay in the match, but Haas denied him the break four times in the second set while making the most of his own opportunities. With Sunday's victory, Haas added the Memphis title to the Delray Beach title he clinched in his last tournament appearance, and also joined elite company in World No. 1 Roger Federer and World No. 5 Ivan Ljubicic, currently the circuit's only other two-time titlists of the season. He also improved to a 17-3 season mark for 2006, tying him with Ljubicic for the circuit lead. Other than a five-set defeat to Richard Gasquet in the Davis Cup tie between Germany and France earlier this month, Haas' only losses this year have come to Federer. Haas, who has been working with Swedish coach and former ATP pro Thomas Hogstedt this season, began the year at No. 46 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings but has quickly moved to No. 30. Following Sunday's victory, he will climb up to around No. 28. Haas won his last pair of back-to-back titles in 2001, in Vienna and the ATP Masters Series event in Stuttgart. With the exception of the Stuttgart title which came on clay, eight of the German’s nine titles have been won on hard court - including four on indoor hard court. Soderling brought a modest 2-3 ATP-level record into Memphis before turning in his best circuit performance since January 2005 in Milan. He took out last year’s finalists in the first two rounds, crushing 2005 runner-up and seventh seed Max Mirnyi 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and defending champion Kenneth Carlsen in the second round. He also recorded a solid quarterfinal win over rising star Andy Murray, who had come into Memphis on the heels of a title-winning performance in San Jose.
WELL DONE TOMMY!!! ;D
