Italian Bracciali disposes of Andreev 21-2-2006 | 13:47:54 More often than not, qualifiers are dangerous opponents to encounter in the main tournament. Having played two matches already, they are used to the surroundings, as well as the speed of the courts and the balls. Daniele Bracciali emphasised the point by beating Igor Andreev (7) in straight sets earlier today. The set scores (6-2, 6-3) give a fair reflection of the match - the 28-year-old Italian was clearly the better player.
“Actually, this was my best match ever,” the winner rejoiced afterwards. “I can’t tell you how happy I am.” Bracciali, who lives in Avezzo, beat Dutchman John van Lottum (in three sets) and Swiss Michael Lammer (in straight sets) during this weekend’s qualifying tournament. Two matches that gave him ample opportunity to prepare for the main tournament. Bracciali produced some masterful strokes against Andreev, who beat him as recently as October last year. This time, it was Bracciali who dictated proceedings. The Italian’s prospects for the remainder of this week are also good – he next meets either the inexperienced Antal van der Duim or lucky loser Alex Calatrava. “No matter who you play, all matches are tough at this level”, Bracciali concluded. “I have not yet met Van der Duim, but Calatrava is my buddy. He’s an excellent player and ranked in the top-50 until a few years ago.”
