Errors Costly For Vesnina Sunday, 22 January, 2006 by Scott Spits
No.6 seed Nadia Petrova has become the first Russian through to the quarter-finals of Australian Open 2006, comfortably dispatching young compatriot Elena Vesnina 6-3 6-1 in 62 minutes.
With the Extreme Heat Policy enacted early on Day Seven, the match was played under a closed roof at Vodafone Arena and Petrova was able to achieve her best result in seven tournaments at Melbourne Park by reaching at least the final eight in 2006.
The unforced errors count told the tale for the two players with 19-year-old Vesnina committing 35, compared to just 13 for the higher-ranked Petrova. Most of those errors came from the backhand of Vesnina and it was undoubtedly her Achilles heel.
Petrova won seven straight games from 3-3 in the first set to 4-0 in the second. Importantly, Vesnina broke the streak by breaking serve, converting her second break point with a perfectly-timed forehand offensive lob.
23-year-old Petrova is in the middle of a purple patch of form at Grand Slam events after a semi-final appearance at Roland Garros and quarter-final berths at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2005.
Current Match on Vodafone Arena Vodafone Arena - WS - 4th Round Match Statistics Elena Vesnina RUS 3 1 Nadia Petrova RUS (6) 6 6
• Petrova approached the net 14 times and won the point nine times • When Petrova's first serve was accurate, she won the point 72 per cent of the time • Petrova was dangerous when receiving, winning 60 per cent of the points

Davenport Breezes Past Kuznetsova Sunday, 22 January, 2006 by Bren O'Brien
Women's No.1 seed Lindsay Davenport has progressed through to the quarter-finals of Australian Open 2006 with 6-2 6-4 win over Russian No.14 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Davenport, who won the Australian Open in 2000 and was the runner-up to Serena Williams in 2005, breezed through the first set in just 18 minutes and looked like having a similarly easy passage through the second set on Rod Laver Arena.
But after racing to a 3-0 lead, she lost the next four games and received treatment on an injured foot as the Russian fought back. However, Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, continued to make unforced errors, costing her service in the ninth game and the match when she netted a backhand in the tenth game.
Davenport now plays Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne, who blitzed Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-0 6-3.
Current Match on Rod Laver Arena Rod Laver Arena - WS - 4th Round Match Statistics Lindsay Davenport USA (1) 0 6 6 Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (14) 0 2 4
• Davenport did not drop her service until the fourth game of the second set, but lost it to love • Davenport committed just nine unforced errors, Kuznetsova had 19 • Kuznetsova got less than half (21 of 52) of her first serves in • Davenport now has a 3-1 record over the Russian. Her only loss was in the semi-finals of the US Open
