Ivanisevic to captain Croatia Davis Cup team - report 2005-12-27 09:23:26 GMT (Reuters)
ZAGREB, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic is likely to be appointed Croatia's Davis Cup captain, daily newspaper Jutarnji List reported on Tuesday.
Croatia, led by coach Niki Pilic, won the Davis Cup beating Slovakia in the final earlier this month.
The daily said Ivanisevic, who retired in 2004 because of a shoulder injury, was due to meet the head of the Croatian Tennis Association (HTS) on Wednesday for final talks.
"As it seems now, I'm likely to take over as the team captain from Pilic, who will stay on as my adviser," the 34-year-old Ivanisevic told the paper.
"I believe we will carry on with good results after this sensational triumph. It is now up to us to break with a tradition that Davis Cup winners almost regularly lose in the first round the following season," Ivanisevic said.
Ivanisevic was included in Croatia's team for the final but did not play a match.
Croatia begin the defence of their title against Austria in Graz in February.

Croatia delay Ivanisevic decision
Goran Ivanisevic will not be appointed captain of Davis Cup champions Croatia until January, according to reports. Ivanisevic was expected to be appointed at a meeting with Croatian tennis chief Radimir Cacic on Wednesday.
But Croatian news agency Hina said the pair will meet again on 16 January to define the future roles of Ivanisevic and current captain Niki Pilic.
Pilic told Hina: "I will cede my post to Ivanisevic, but will stay on with the team to help as an adviser."
Croatia beat Slovakia in the Davis Cup final earlier this month.
The 34-year-old Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon as a wild card in 2001, came out of retirement for the final and was on the team but did not play.
Croatia will begin the defence of their title against Austria in Graz in February.

A bit of an odd choice but Ivanisevic gives up on captaincy
Goran Ivanisevic has ended his attempt to become the next captain of Davis Cup champions Croatia. The 2001 Wimbledon champion said he wanted to replace Niko Pilic after Croatia beat Slovakia to win the Cup for the first time in December.
Ivanisevic told the Sportske Novosti newspaper: "It's over. Perhaps for good, perhaps for the next 10 years.
"This is my final decision. I wish the guys and Pilic all the best, may they repeat the Davis Cup success."
Ivanisevic assisted leading the team for most of last year and it had been reported that he would take over from Pilic in time for their first-round tie against Austria in February.
The 34-year-old also came out of retirement for the December final and was on the team but did not play.
But now Ivanisevic believes his Davis Cup involvement and his bid to become captain were ill-timed.
"I was probably wrong to reactivate for the Davis Cup," he said. "But there is no anger, no bitterness."
Ivanisevic now plans to focus on playing on the Senior Tour and other work outside tennis.
Pilic, who also won the Davis Cup with Germany, intends to be at the helm for the tie against Austria in Graz.
"That's as far as we agreed for now," Pilic told the Jutarnji List newspaper. "We have yet to see how to proceed."
