It must have been nice for them to have some warm weather and sunshine while winter is still around for them at home.

Translated from Izvestiya newspaper today. Thanks to lena for finding this Tennis Coach Peter Lundgren: "Safin lost confidence"by Svetlana SokolovaDeparture of the world’s ex-number 1 Marat Safin from the top 100 of the ATP Rankings that was fixed this Monday became the critical point of his suffering. Long knee injury healing, separation from his Swedish coach Peter Lundgren and a recent car accident in Cincinnati preceded that. Lundgren is the person our correspondent Svetlana Sokolova turned to in order to try and find some answers to what was happening with Marat. - Mister Lundgren, what was the reason for your “break-up” with Marat? - I would not use the word “break-up”. We did not part ways forever, our team work continues. It’s just that Marat wanted to try and train independently, hence the temporary break. - And how long will that last? - Until the end of the US Open.- You did not reply about the reason for this? - Marat said, I need a pause in order to come back to my senses. I need to find myself as a player and as a person again – the second prevailing. I answered - no problem. Especially considering the tough summer he’s been having.- Is Marat very upset by all these failures? Recently he’s even been in an accident… - Yeah, that’s terrible. Considering his car was a total loss, he must have been at serious risk. But you have to know Marat – his whole life is one neverending adventure.- Was the accident a result of Marat’s failures on court? - I don’t think so. Even though he is obviously very nervous and wants to get back out there. Lately Marat has not been playing too well, he lost confidence and it is very hard to get that back. In tennis everyone knows each other and everyone sees everything. If you didn’t fight on court, it means you will need more time to achieve your goals than you expected. I think that in autumn during an indoor season Marat will have less problems.- Does Marat do everything you tell him? - Yes, he has been practising extremely hard. In this respect I do not have any problems with him whatsoever. The problem is different. He does not receive as much as he is used to despite the hard work. It scares him and shakes his self-confidence. At the end of the day it totally reflects in his results. Safin is fighting his injury, he is a professional and above all is extremely talented. But Marat has to understand: to play the way he wants to, he has to be 100% ready. But he is still not ready… - Be honest, do you think Marat can be the world’s number 1 again? - Well, maybe not number 1 but he has a great chance of reaching the top 10. I think this is the goal he should be setting for himself and he has to gradually move towards it. First, try to finish the year in top 50 and then show all his abilities, which totally match top 10.- What do you think about Marat’s lifestyle? Maybe it’s something else that is interfering? - No, I do not think so. He has changed a great deal, became much calmer.- Maybe he has some personal problems? - You know, I usually stay out of his personal life, but I think this is a whole series of problems. When everything is great at home, a person is good on court. Marat wants to win, his losses shake his personal life too. Soon the Russian team will play the DC semifinal against USA. I think playing for the team might help Marat.

omg, when they put together all the things that have happened to marat recently,it looks even scarier ! it seems that peter really does care about him-i've never doubted that, tho .it's good that they understand each other, but the bad thing about it is that might not be good at some point, when you get too close with the person that is supposed to push you more and cure your laziness . it nice to see that marat listens to peter's advice and wants to play the top tennis .never doubted that either ;D .

Thanks alot for this article. It was very insightful.
I think as I said before, that Marat and Peter have a relationship that actually goes beyond the work they do together. They respect and understand each other and that's very important.
Regardless of how the working relationship goes or doesn't go as the case maybe, I really hope that they will never lose that. I think Peter has been a good influence on Marat not just tennis wise.

i've read that article pretty quickly,so i might have missed some important spots .i can't think anymore about marat & peter,i hope they will stay together,if not-then marat probably knows the best what he's doing and what he needs[at least he's able to think using his own head and is trying to find a better solution for his situation at the moment ].i hope whatever he decides-it'll help him . what annoys me right now is the part about "importing" novak & ana!it's just getting too stupid, and i'm not thinking only about tennis.i guess i know too little about sport to understand that .personaally,i don't care much about nationality,i rather like sports[wo]men because they're somehow interesting and good at what they do.i'm really not a huge fan of anyone else's except marat's.i like djokovic very much and i always support him,i also like some other tennis players.but, for example-pashanski-i don't care much about him, even though he's from here and playing for my country, but still-if he would play under some other country's flag-i'd look at it like a pretty weird thing .don't know what's all that fight about.btw,i know ana has said a few times that she doesn't have any doubts about the country she'll play for.on the other hand, considering the situation in sport here, and the interest the government or whoever shows for it-actually mostly for tennis,i'm not sure how i would act if i were in their shoes .i'd rather understand players changing the country they play for, than people insisting on getting some of them.

I think it's over Lundgren 'to coach GB Cup team' Peter Lundgren is Great Britain's new Davis Cup coach, according to New DC captain John Lloyd Lundgren, who used to coach Roger Federer, will help the team for the Euro-Africa relegation play-off against Ukraine, which starts on 22 September. "He is one of the top 10 coaches in the world," new British captain John Lloyd told the Sunday Telegraph. "The guys are lucky to have him." Lloyd hopes Swede Lundgren will prolong his involvement with the team beyond the Davis Cup clash with Ukraine. Lloyd, who replaced Jeremy Bates, says Lundgren has all the necessary qualities to be a big hit. "The other important thing is that he used to work for the Swiss federation," added Lloyd. "Federer found him through the Davis Cup, so he knows the ins-and-outs of that system as well as working with two incredible players in Federer and Marat Safin." Lundgren and Federer teamed up in 1998, their relationship lasting five years before Lundgren was ditched after helping the Swiss star win Wimbledon and the Masters Cup in 2003. The Swede then started working with Marat Safin a year later, the Russian winning the 2005 Australian Open. Lundgren would be the second high-profile coach to be appointed since Roger Draper took over as the Lawn Tennis Association's chief executive. In July, Draper secured the services of Brad Gilbert, a former coach to Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, to work with Andy Murray and on other LTA projects.
